You've heard But I Want the Harmonica.... You've played Piano Games. Now it's time to get Hammered.
Hammered is Jeanell Carrigan's third CD of Australian piano works and takes its name from Stephen Leek's composition of the same name, a quirky work for prepared piano which ends up sounding more like a Gamelan orchestra lost in Newtown than a piano.
Hammered sets the pace for this disk of eight Australian works which showcase the sheer range of sounds that can be drawn out of the humble piano. Carrigan is particularly interested in the concept of how composers juxtapose energy and atmosphere, and her choice of repertoire gives her the opportunity to explore these qualities in a dynamic and compelling performance. It is a tribute to the dedication and skill of pianist Jeanell Carrigan that this is her third disc of Australian piano works, all of which are previously unrecorded. In her quest to uncover and promote the work of Australian composers, she has explored over 900 works; only eight of these are recorded here, but their diversity gives a fascinating insight into the versatility of both the piano and contemporary piano composition styles.
